The Supermarket Takeover

When I first moved to the town there was only one main supermarket, I think it was called Gateway that was taken over by the ASDA. Now Winsford has several large stores:

ASDA 14%,

MORRISONS 8.7%,

ALDI 10.1%,

FARMFOODS with other independents <1.5%,

Market share statistics are from Statista April 2023.

As these stores grow and expand we seem to lose all our independent shops, the bpccouncil.gov.uk says that they control 97% of the grocery market. I used to work on an independent family fruit and veg stall when I was a child, that market is now a shell compared to the bustling fresh produce shopping area it was.

There is now talk we are to have the other large German owned supermarket with 7.6% of our supermarket share wanting to open a store in Winsford.

On 2 May 2023, I read an article by Jess Clark in the Guardian newspaper that Britain’s biggest supermarkets are facing calls for the UKs competition watchdog to investigate claims of profiteering amid the cost of living crisis.
