Winsford Flash.
In the 2021 Census, Winsford, Cheshire was home to 32,527 residents. With considerable new residential developments, current estimates suggest the population has grown to around 35,000 people. The town covers an area of 10.35 km² with a population density of 3,143/km².
The shopping center, previously unattractive since its 1970s construction, is now owned by the Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) and is undergoing revitalisation. The new buildings aim to enhance the town’s aesthetics for both new and existing residents eagerly anticipating these changes.
A new Costa Coffee drive through and cafe opened in May 2024 at the corner of Dene Drive, sparking mixed feelings about its modern design among town residents, the typography on the frontage is in my opinion quite a nice addition and at least they’ve planted a few small trees.
Additionally, a public square in front of the Library is in the works, scheduled to house war memorials by Winter 2024.
Furthermore, a large B&M store measuring 26,000 sq ft with an 8,800 sq ft garden centre is under construction where Fountain Court once stood. This development, equivalent to half a football pitch, is slated for completion in early 2025. I just hope that it isn’t B&M’s usual ugly grey industrial estate façade with their overlarge signage, any shop sign seems to be acceptable in Winsford .
The proposed town centre image revealed by CWAC, the new Aldi store is just outside of the image on the right bottom corner.

Despite these improvements, there remains a local challenge in providing adult-focused activities. The town’s facilities have seen upgrades, such as the revamped leisure centre where children enjoy swimming, gym and karate classes. Notably, Town Park enhancements linking the Town Centre to the Flash are expected to complement the finalisation of the Town Centre’s reconstruction.
In addressing community needs, a video highlighting Bob Barton, a youth worker in Winsford, sheds light on the town’s youth centre. Many teenagers attended high schools outside Winsford, such as in Weaverham, Hartford, Leftwich, and Tarporley, so aren’t all aware of local Youth Centre initiatives.
I often stroll around Winsford, where I notice numerous open green spaces that lack organised activities, making them often unused. The walking paths, favoured by dog walkers, are increasingly flooded, riddled with potholes, and broken glass rendering otherwise safe areas inaccessible for weeks. The town could benefit from some care and attention, but residents are preoccupied with full-time jobs and family responsibilities in newer areas attracting new families. This situation raises concerns about potential boredom among residents, particularly children.
I have noticed a group of local individuals coming together on weekends to clean up litter in an organised manner. The Gate Pub on Delamere Street has undergone renovations, and the owners have passionately revitalised the pub, offering affordable meals and special Monday deals. If you haven’t visited yet, it’s worth checking out, they have a free ample car park.
